An editorial imprint

An imprint for the useful book.

General Information publishes concise reference guides — on the household, the workday, and the civic hour — written for adults and edited like books.

What we publish

Four shelves. One editor. A small, plainly-written catalog.

Every title lives on one of four shelves. Each shelf is edited by the same hand, in the same voice, at the same length — short enough to finish in an evening, long enough to keep.

The Working Day

Guides on attention, meetings, correspondence, and the small architecture of an ordinary workweek.

The Household

Reference reading for the running of a home — money, meals, maintenance, quiet Sundays.

See the guides

The Civic Hour

Short plain-English primers on the paperwork of adult life: taxes, tenancy, small courts, letters to write.

The Reading Room

Essays and long notes — the sort of writing you keep in a folder and return to.

From the catalog

Four short books, kept on the front table.

A selection from the current list. Every guide is a PDF and an ePub — sold once, kept forever, no subscription and no newsletter.

How we work

Every title reads three times.

  1. One editor reads every manuscript at least three times.
  2. Manuscripts sit for a week between the second and third read; nothing goes to print in a hurry.
  3. Each guide is edited to a target length — if a chapter can be cut in half, it usually is.

For libraries

Reading-room copies for public and campus libraries.

General Information licenses the full catalog to public library systems and academic reading rooms — with a plain one-page agreement and pricing that fits the collection.
